In the late 1970s, I was working on my master’s degree one summer and living in a college town 30 miles from Sedalia. I was in transition to a new apartment in Sedalia, where I taught junior high students. I spent a lot of time in there waiting for friends to finish their workdays that summer. The only safe and quiet place to spend time and not money was the Sedalia Public Library! I loved exploring the local history books kept under lock and key. In later years, I explored the history videotapes on loan to use in an American history class. Fast forward to the past few years, where I’ve reserved a community room to host board meetings for an organization when we cannot meet in our usual meeting place. The library is a beautiful historic building that has had to weather the enemy of time and decay. The building has been carefully maintained to be a shining star in a historic area of our town.
