Defiance Public Library is honored to be the recipient of a $10,000 gift from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. This generous investment recognizes the enduring importance of Carnegie libraries as civic landmarks and centers of learning — and it comes at a pivotal moment for our community.
As we move forward with plans to construct a new library annex across the street, we are equally committed to caring for and preserving our historic Carnegie building. The Carnegie gift will be dedicated to renovations within the original library, with a primary focus on replacing the building’s aging HVAC system. While often unseen, this upgrade is essential to the long-term health of the library.
A modern HVAC system will significantly improve comfort for patrons and staff, enhance energy efficiency, and help protect the library’s collections and architectural features from damage caused by temperature fluctuations. Most importantly, it ensures that the Carnegie building remains a safe, welcoming, and functional space for generations to come.
This project reflects a thoughtful balance between progress and preservation. By investing in critical infrastructure now, we are honoring Andrew Carnegie’s original vision of libraries as enduring public institutions — while preparing Defiance Public Library to meet the needs of today’s community and tomorrow’s readers.
