Now in its 112th year of continuous operation as a public library, our community celebrates the library being the crown jewel of downtown Detroit Lakes. From the city’s Christmas tree to concerts, author events, children’s programs, writing workshops, and so much more, our small town is beyond grateful to Carnegie Corporation of New York for Andrew Carnegie’s vision and insight about the role of public libraries as essential to a functioning democracy. We are part of a seven-county regional library system, benefiting from services otherwise not available to small-town libraries. We also have a library foundation managing endowed funds that will ensure the future of the library as a place where future generations have the tools and environment in which to thrive. Personally, libraries have been a part of my life since before I could read. Seven decades later, they’re my second home.
