In 2014 I started a journey. There were, at one time, four Carnegie Libraries here in Santa Cruz, California. Now, only two of the buildings remain. The one that had been closest to my home, the Eastside Library, had been in what is now a traffic-locked triangle of land. No one could believe there was a building there, let alone a Carnegie Library. So I undertook the task of rallying the community to place a marker in what was known as the Eastside Triangle. I went to numerous meetings of the library board and the Santa Cruz City Council. Community members supported my cause, and eventually the city council. With the help of Ralston Concrete, we got the marker built, and on September 26, 2015, the marker was unveiled. A fitting memorial to what had once been an integral part of our community.
