I have always loved libraries, so it was an honor and joy to serve as the president of the board of directors of the Valley City Barnes County Public Library from 2019–2025. It has been a wild ride through the COVID-19 pandemic, a book challenge, and a restoration project of the 1903 Carnegie building. The main purpose of the restoration was to address the leakage of the roof, but it also provided an opportunity to reinforce the roof and restore the rotunda and dome to their 1903 glory. Most of the main floor is still original, including the circulation desk, bookcases, window cases, and Tiffany window. A 1996 addition did keep the original structure intact but provided additional much-needed space. During the restoration I learned more about the significance of Carnegie Libraries in American history and the origin story of the VCBC public library. Knowing we build on a legacy that started 120 years ago made being part of the project even more special. I am humbled and proud of the support we received from our community to preserve the 1903 building and have it serve as a library for another 120 years.
