I do remember getting my library card as a child — probably somewhere around the mid to late 1950s. I remember fondly librarian Miss Joles. Then, I was mostly interested in horse-related (the entire Walter Farley Black Stallion series, a biography of Man O’War, for example) and other animal-related stories. The library was just a few blocks from home — a walkable distance in any weather, even in Iowa. Mom worked in the Jackson County Courthouse, so I could go to the library to wait for her workday to end. I had Brownie Scout gatherings in the basement. The last time I visited the library was in 2016. I was so happy to see the library so modernized but also see that its beauty and character maintained a sense of dignity and history.
