Goose Creek District Library serves a district of less than 800 with less than $110,000 per year. Some of the Carnegie Libraries 250 gift was used to supplement our programming and collection development funds, but the largest portion was dedicated to our new community garden! With the funds, we were able to purchase 10 titanium raised garden beds, gravel, soil, gardening tools, plant cages, vegetable plants, seeds, and more! We have had overwhelming support from the community, and we are so grateful for one patron who donated over 40 pounds of seed packets to help jump-start our Little Free Seed Library in coordination with our community garden.
Because we are a small library serving a small district, we often operate on a very small budget with very limited resources. The board, staff, and community were so surprised and have been so excited and grateful that we were chosen to receive such a large gift! At first the board and I were not sure if a check was really coming in the mail… It seemed too good to be true! But then it showed up, and we rejoiced all week. We are so grateful for every gift, grant, and donation we receive, and I have no doubt that, with our hard work and dedication to access to information, education, and community, we are making Mr. Andrew Carnegie proud and carrying on his legacy.
