I’m the Local Historian for the Alexandria Monroe Public Library — here is my favorite memory.
On December 3, 2023, we celebrated the 120th anniversary of our Carnegie Library by holding an open house. We followed the original open house itinerary as described in the archival newspapers of December 3, 1903. We had an orchestra play, staff dressed in historical clothing, and tours were offered to the historical areas of the building that are normally closed to the public.
Recently, on the evening of December 7, 2025, we again held an open house to share the good news that we are the recipients of a $10,000 Carnegie Corporation of New York gift. Our historic letters between Mr. James Bertram and our then–library board were put on display. They detail Mr. Carnegie’s original gift of $12,000. We also displayed our expense sheet from his gift, building blueprints, photos, and many other library-related items from our archives.
Our small town was thrilled with our good fortune and filled the library to celebrate with us!
And just for the record, back in 1903, when our building was complete and all the bills paid, $3.55 remained to be spent!
